Ashes spark shed blaze

It was the quick actions of a resident which saved a Deniliquin home from being destroyed by fire Saturday night.

The occupant had almost fully extinguished a blaze which started in the shed attached to the Jameson St home by the time firefighters arrived about 5.30pm,

Deniliquin Fire + Rescue NSW firefighters finished off dousing the blaze, cooled down hot spots and checked the immediate area with a thermal imaging camera.

Firefighters even removed sheets of tin from the shed roof to ensure the fire had not spread to the roof cavity.

Brigade Captain Martin Smith said the blaze could have been much worse.

‘‘If the fire was noticed by the resident any later, we could have had a house fully involved,’’ Capt Smith said.

‘‘The fire started from ashes that were removed from the fire place that morning.

‘‘I would like to remind everyone to extinguish ashes removed from fireplaces and wood heaters, and keep them in a non combustible container such as a metal bucket. This should then be kept in an area away from any combustible materials.’’
