New DA for gardens

A new development application has been lodged in an effort to restart work in the Deniliquin Waring Gardens.

Edward River Council has made the application while it awaits the results of a Heritage NSW assessment on the project.

Works stopped earlier this month after it was discovered a protection order had been in place since 1981.

The existence of the order was not revealed when planning the upgrades, or during a new heritage review undertaken this year relating specifically to the partial removal of the low brick wall on Cressy St.

Similarly, it was not flagged when previous upgrades at the gardens were undertaken, including the installation of the playground and toilet upgrades.

The continuation of work will be subject to approval by Heritage NSW.

Mayor Norm Brennan said a department assessor visited last week, but is yet to provide council with a report.

‘‘The assessor took photos of the Waring Gardens, monuments and all the structures to go back to Heritage New South Wales in Sydney,’’ he said.

‘‘Council is working with Heritage New South Wales to ensure the works comply with their requirements, and to ensure works can start as soon as possible.’’
