Local group Edward River Paws at Play has been asking Edward River Council for a fenced, off-leashed area since council drafted its Deniliquin Masterplan in 2018.
The area has been a proposed off-leash area since, but initial applications for funding fell through.
‘‘I was able to apply for a grant and we only just missed out on that,’’ Paws at Play administrator Angelina Huddle told the Pastoral Times.
Mrs Huddle then petitioned council to make the dog park a reality.
‘‘When I did a petition for people to sign, I dropped that in (to council) and then I got an email a few months ago to say that it was happening and I was asked to go down and look at the pegged out area.
‘‘I was thrilled.’’
ERC notified her the council had been successful in a bid for a Local Roads and Community Infrastructure grant in the program’s first round.
A spokesperson for council said the park gives dogs a safe place to socialise.
‘‘Dog waste bins, seats, fencing and a landscaped sandpit have been completed,’’ the spokesperson said.
There is also a smaller fenced area inside the larger one, to separate smaller dogs from larger ones or dogs which may need to play separately.
Work is expected to finish this week with the addition of signage and waste bag dispensers.
Mrs Huddle said the park is already a success.
‘‘The feedback has been great, especially during COVID,’’ she said.
‘‘People have been able to get out and exercise their dog and have them run around inside the pen — it’s been very positive.’’
