The Deniliquin Salvation Army has been fundraising across the communities of Deniliquin, Mathoura, Jerilderie and Finley.
Deniliquin Salvation Army community engagement worker Sandra Whyborn said the aim before the appeal began was to raise $10,000.
She expressed a “big thank you” to those who have donated so far, especially given the current climate.
“We are grateful for the community’s support in these difficult economic times,” she said.
“The money we raise will enable The Salvation Army to continue to support our local community in times of need.
“The Red Shield Appeal closes on June 30, so you still have time to donate.”
One of the new programs the funding may support is a community lunch initiative.
“In July we are opening up the Salvation Army Hall for a community lunch, during the colder months,” Ms Whyborn said.
“If you want to come down for a coffee and a chat, make new friendships and enjoy a warm meal, come and join us.
“We will have more information about this program soon.”
Ms Whyborn said in appreciation of those who have donated in May and June, thank you events will be held later in the year.
“As the weather warms us, we are planning to go back into the communities to have a barbecue and say thank you for our support.
“This will also allow us to find out ways in which we can further support these communities.”
All Red Shield Appeal donations over $2 are tax deductible, and can be dropped off to the Deniliquin Salvo Family Store in Cressy St.
