A constant trickle of reported frauds has prompted Murray River Police District to issue a warning to residents.
Inspector Paul Huggett said the rule of thumb is to question every email, SMS and call asking you to download an app, send money or provide personal contact details.
He also said you should check the information yourself before reacting to any request.
Insp Huggett said two of the most common reports lately relate to banks and eBay, each reporting alleged security breaches.
“They may ask you to download an app, which only gives them access to your device,” Insp Huggett said.
“My advice is to go directly to your bank app, or check directly with the company in question, instead of clicking on the link provided in these messages.
“Ring your bank, the ATO or whatever agency they claim to be from and always check the information before complying.”
