It is returning to its traditional collection points while maintaining a digital presence in its first full campaign since 2019.
Now in its 57th year, the Red Shield Appeal is the Salvos’ flagship fundraising appeal which aims to raise funds to support social and community services.
The funds raised locally will be used to support those experiencing hardship in Benalla and the surrounding communities.
Ben and Jaimee Anderson, leaders of the Salvos in Benalla, have noticed the changes in community needs over the past two years.
“We have seen a huge increase in food and housing insecurity for many older people in our community,” Mr Anderson said.
“Along with assisting families, we are looking at ways to alleviate both physical needs and the distress caused by a lack of resources amongst those who are vulnerable because of age and ill health.”
In the lead-up to the federal election, the Salvos completed a social justice stocktake for each electorate.
The areas of most concern for residents of Indi included mental health, housing affordability and family violence.
Given these concerns, and the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Andersons have observed the uncertainty many of the most vulnerable people in the Benalla region are experiencing.
“Given the issues that many members of the community are currently facing, we want the Salvos to be a safe space for them to share their needs and receive assistance,” Mr Anderson said.
“The money we raise through the Red Shield Appeal allows us to explore more options as people connect with us, as we provide the most basic of needs such as food and clothing.
“It will also help us to partner with other community groups to address some of those pressing concerns to residents of Indi, such as housing instability.”
Mr Anderson said the Salvos relied on the generosity of the public to support the community.
“If you have the means, please consider donating to the Red Shield Appeal. Your generosity and support helps us to give hope where it’s needed most,” he said.
Collectors will be at Benalla’s Woolworths and Coles stores from May 23.
Those who wish to donate can also visit the Salvos stores on Bridge St.
