The Shepparton man, 35, pleaded guilty in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court to assault of a female, committing an indictable offence on bail and contravening a family violence intervention order.
Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Sean Walsh told the court the man became angry at his ex-partner and threw a 1.25 litre bottle at her leg and abused her while they were sitting at the Shepparton house where they were living on November 13.
The next day he continued to abuse her, calling her derogatory names.
The following day, on November 15, the man came home drunk and attempted to kick the woman, before grabbing her by the hair and dragging her outside, before she ran away, Leading Sen Constable Walsh said.
The man’s solicitor Ian Michaelson told the court the woman had been left homeless three weeks earlier and had moved in with the man, despite the fact she had an intervention order out against him.
“Some people don’t understand when there in an intervention order is in place that they can’t vary it,” Mr Michaelson said.
The defence solicitor conceded his client had an alcohol problem and used cannabis, but was surprised police deemed him not fit to interview on the day of the incident.
In sentencing the man to an 18-month community corrections order, magistrate Peter Mithen told him that any violence against women was serious.
“Dragging someone by the hair is not on,” Mr Mithen said.
The community order includes 120 hours of community work, with up to 30 hours of drug and alcohol treatment and other behaviour change programs being able to be counted towards these hours.
