Inaccuracy early in the clash proved costly for the Redeyes, who were left trailing by eight points at quarter time despite having five scoring shots to three, with a woeful 0.5 start.
The Blues made the most of their opportunities in the second quarter, to take a 31 point lead into the main break, before slowly building on their lead in the second half.
The loss leaves Blighty one win and 11 per cent outside of the top eight, making it near impossible for them to climb into finals contention.
Picola’s Tom Hislop looked the goods with five goals, with Corey Cogan, Marcus Walsh and Dylan Cunningham in top form.
Lachie MacDonald, Tyler Amor-Beale and playing-coach Jack Tyndall were the Redeyes’ best on what was a disappointing day.
Final score, Picola Utd 10.9 (69) to Blighty 1.9 (15).
Tyndall said it was his side’s wayward kicking in the first term that was the catalyst for the big loss.
‘‘We were up and about from the start but those misses sapped our confidence,’’ he said.
‘‘They were a lot better than us from the second quarter onwards.
‘‘It’s a bit of a downer to lose like that after the way we started, but we simply didn’t execute when we had the chance.’’
Despite the result Tyndall was still upbeat about the game, saying it was a great opportunity for some of the club’s younger players to step up.
‘‘We had our most inexperienced side run out on Saturday,’’ he said.
‘‘We had young Myles Amor play as the sub, with Jack Charlton playing his first full senior game. While this year has been disappointing results wise, we at least have been able to get games into the future senior players of the club.’’
The Blighty reserves look poised for finals footy following a 91 point win over the Blues.
It was a stacked reserves line-up with Tyndall and MacDonald playing two games for the day, with the former managing four goals.
Veteran defender Leigh Culton also snuck forward for four goals, with Ash (three) and Kyel Bain (two) also kicking multiples.
Final score, Blighty 15.8 (98) to Picola Utd 1.1 (7).
Better players were Culton, Brent Mitchell, Luke Charlton, Luke Hay, Blake Charlton and Bret Leech.
