After being dropped at second slip the first ball he faced, Edge punished his opponents, smashing 10 ‘fours’ and three ‘sixes’ on his way to 106 not out.
The score helped the MVCA Colts, a team made up of mostly Under 21 players under the guidance of Edge and Nathalia’s Luke Quinn, to 7/233 against Red Cliffs.
The MVCA successfully defended the total, having Red Cliffs all out for 160 after 43 overs.
It was the opening batsmen’s first century since 2014, where he tonned up with 100 not out for the Rhinos against Cobram-Yarroweyah United.
When asked how he felt the day after scoring the ton, Edge simply replied with ‘‘sore’’.
‘‘It was good for a change to go on and get a big score,’’ he said.
‘‘The most pleasing part was that the kids had something to bowl at, rather than trying to defend a small total.
‘‘I’ve had about four or five centuries in my time, but they were with other clubs.’’
The Colts started their week with a tough 18 run loss against Northern United on Monday,
MVCA bowled brilliantly with debutants Rory Knight (4/16 off six), Ben Lukies (2/16 off 4.2) and Aaron Harding (2/18 off six) starring with the ball.
Fellow debutant Lachlan Hyde (0/17 off five) also anchored the innings beautifully and handled himself well.
In response the Colts could only manage 104 runs before they were all out.
Quinn top-scored with 35 runs while Hyde backed up his solid bowling effort with 27.
MVCA were unable to overcome Wimmera Mallee on day two, suffering a 55 run loss on Tuesday.
Despite the loss it was again a stellar bowling performance by the younger players.
Lukies did not put a foot wrong all day, taking 3/10 off seven with some sublime bowling.
Will Lavery (3/19 off 4.4)) came on late and did the exact job asked of him, cleaning up the tail with good flight and bounce, with Wimmera all out on 175.
On the batting front Reilly Rennick (12) did a good job of holding the anchor roll, while Jack Andrew (21) showed plenty of the potential with the bat.
It was once again experienced head Quinn who top-scored with 42, helping the Colts to 120 before they were all out.
With a bye yesterday, the MVCA’s one win on Wednesday was not enough to earn them a spot in the final.
‘‘It was good to finish off the week with a win on the board,’’ Edge said.
‘‘Before the week I didn’t know how it would be working with the kids.
‘‘They’re a ripping group though, and all in all it was a solid week.’’
