It was his first return to the top of the podium since consecutive wins from 2007 to 2010.
Thomas completed a brilliant performance with a one under par, for a total of 71 on Saturday.
With his previous rounds a week earlier of 73 and 68, he finished with with a four under par and total of 212 to see him take home the title easily.
Club stalwarts are suggesting this might be the lowest three round total recorded in championship history.
Tory Grant finished second with a three round score of 236, Vince Kelly was third with 237 and Graeme Willoughby finished fourth with 238.
Golf Club Captain John Radeski said the surprise of the day came in B Grade, which required an extra four holes to be played before a winner could be declared.
‘‘B Grade required a three hole playoff, which still ended in a tie,’’ he said.
‘‘There was then a sudden death on the 10th hole, which saw Neil Boswell come out on top over Thomas Bult.’’
Boswell and Bult started the day tied in second place and both recorded round three scores of 82 to finish with 256.
The play-off was played over 10, 11 and 18, and as the pair were playing 18, the heavens opened adding further drama to the day.
The experienced and steady hand of Boswell proved the difference in the sudden death round.
While no doubt disappointed to not take home the chocolates, Thomas can take some consultation from the day having won the Monthly Medal for April.
Six B grade players went into the final round within five shots of the lead.
Despite holding the lead going in to Saturday’s round, Ross Taylor fell back to third with a three rounds score of 265. George Willis finished one shot behind, on 266.
In C grade Gary Rodda completed a wire-to-wire win with a final round of 94, for a three round total of 271.
As expected the fortunes of the C Grade field ebbed and flowed throughout the day, but Rodda maintained his composure to record a 10 stroke win over his playing partner for the day Mark Thomas.
Third was Matt McDonald with 288 and fourth was Ron Turner with 289.
It was a tight contest in D grade, in which Ian Campbell was crowned the champion after a final round 101 and a three round total of 301.
He took out the victory by the narrowest of margins from Des Ramsey (302), with Peter O’Brien a further shot back on 303. Fourth went to David Maraldo on 320.
The Veterans Championship was won by Barry Barlow with a two round nett total of 145. Barlow was also successful in taking out the RAL Putting award.
Rodda was the winner of the JG Everitt Trophy for best two nett scores in the first two rounds of the championship (140).
Saturday’s play was allowed to continue in line with strict social distancing rules, which Radeski said did change the feel of the day slightly.
‘‘It was certainly a bit different playing in two (instead of four), and the weather conditions were quite difficult too,’’ he said.
‘‘There is a bit to get used to with the new restrictions, but we’re getting there.’’
