Four teams have been formed for the 10 week mixed sports competition to be held at the Deniliquin Stadium, with ‘basket-brawl’ kicking off the comp.
First on court was Jack Tyndall’s ‘Tyn-Men’ who swept the floor against Jayden Pitts’ ‘Pitts Posse’, 33 to 14.
Jack Tonta was a monster under the basket in the first half and led the scoring with nine points, while teammate Aiden Free landed nine points in the second half.
Anthony ‘AZ’ Zeilke (nine points) was a star for the losers, while Todd Gallagher racked up five fouls and no points for the Posse in a worst on court performance.
In the second contest, Mack Attack — led by brothers Ryan, Matt and Lachie MacDonald — always looked comfortable against Holobowski’s Hood, winning 23 to 8.
Jake McManus was the standout with eight points from under the ring. Ryan MacDonald set up the talls with his quick hands, and a Brodie McQuie three-pointer surprised everyone, including Brodie.
Tricky Ricky Gittens scored all of the Hood’s points while teammate Matt O’Connor was zero from 10 from the floor.
Special mention to team captain Tim Holobowksi who turned up in a Jordan Dream Team singlet but did not land a hoop.
In the five minute halves decider it was Mac Attack — led by McManus again — taking the four premiership points to start the season.
They extended an 8 to 7 lead at half time, to a 14 to 10 victory.
McManus scored six points, while the fleet-footed Free hit eight points for the Tyn-Men, including two from downtown.
Worst in the grand final went to Tom Druitt who can use a bucket at work but definitely can’t find one on the court.
The Rams would like to thank stadium manager John Arthur for umpiring and putting his whistle away — very few foul calls and not many travels.
The weekly Globe $30 voucher went to McManus.
Rams coach Sam Hall said he’s considering a permanent move to basketball for his players, given 24 is the most he’s had at training in two months.
More players are welcome for a bit of fun – 5.45pm start at the stadium each Thursday.
Ladder: Mack Attack 4 points, Tyn-Men 3, Pitts Posse 2, Holobowski’s Hood 1.
This Thursday is week two of basket-brawl. In week three the Rams turn their talents to indoor cricket.
