For some of the competitors in round five of the Deni Rams Sporting Globe Challenge, that will be the first time hearing that.
When taking the above definition into consideration it is no surprise that the Tyn-Men, on the back of strategies that Patches O’Houlihan would be proud of, scored their maiden victory in the first of two dodgeball legs on Thursday night at the Deniliquin Stadium.
The much-hyped dodgeball round gave everything John Arthur had promised and although some of the participants requested harder balls others, like the members of Holobowski’s Hood, were happy with the balls used for obvious reasons.
There were balls flying everywhere on the indoor courts, with players encouraged to employ the ‘honesty system’ and put their hand up when they were hit by the opposing team. It’s fair to say this didn’t work so well.
Matt O’Connor held the record of being hit nine times before admitting defeat and heading to the back of the court.
In the end it was the Tyn-Men who won a thrilling final over ladder leader Mac Attack.
Tyn-Men won both lead-up matches, 4-2 against Holobowski’s Hoods and 6-0 over Pitts’ Posse.
Mac Attack won their preliminary matches without conceding a game (5-0 in both) to score a place in the final.
Deni Rams co-coach Sam Hall said they would be reviewing the use of the ‘honesty system’ ahead of this week’s second leg of dodgeball.
‘‘I wasn’t there last week but I’m told the honesty system didn’t have the effect we’d hoped.
‘‘We’re certainly not accusing any of the players of cheating, but this week we’re going to be bringing in some extra judges like club legend Billy Bourke and former president Scotty Barlow to ensure when someone gets hit with the ball they actually stop playing and go to the sidelines.
‘‘We look forward to the return of gentlemen like John Anstee and Jayden Pitts to balance out the questionable characters that attended on Thursday night.’’
The Rams are playing a 10-week mixed sports comp in lieu of their footy season being cancelled.
The competition is sponsored by IGA Deniliquin and the Globe Hotel.
Play is held at the Deni Sports Stadium each Thursday starting 5.45pm and all are welcome to join in.
A big thank you to stadium manager John Arthur who kindly umpires each week.
Basketball and indoor cricket were played across the first four weeks and as spring approaches a bit of touch rugby may be added to the schedule.
Ladder: Mac Attack 17 points, Pitts’ Posse 13, Holobowski’s Hoods 11, Tyn-Men 11.
