The Lions were back to their scintillating best on the attacking end, carving up the defensively strong Cats with their crisp ball movement.
Led by a dominant mid-court performance by the returning Casey Adamson and a clinical shooting day by the ever-reliable Jess Lallo, the performance was a swift reminder that Seymour is still every bit a premiership contender.
A-grade coach Ellie O’Sullivan said it was fantastic to respond after a disappointing showing at Memorial Oval last week.
“We had a really good win, which was a bit of a surprise. We knew Mooroopna were going to be tough, but we just had a fantastic day,” O’Sullivan said.
“There was definitely a fire in the belly after the performance last weekend. We were keen to take it to Mooroopna at the start and it was just great to see our game plan come off.”
After being kept to just 38 goals in the loss to Euroa, O’Sullivan said improving connectedness and ball movement was a key focus point for the Lions as they managed to expose arguably the competition’s best defence in Mooroopna.
“We certainly had a bit more speed on the court and that led to some better opportunities for our shooters,” she said.
“I just felt like we had a lot more confidence in each other and our connectedness was a lot better than last weekend. There was a big focus on utilising the first option and it really worked into our favour out on court.
“The win certainly has given us a bit of confidence that we can do it against the best teams. The challenge now is to sustain it.”
In terms of standout performers, she said while everybody played their part in the victory, a couple of girls were particularly impressive.
“It was a real team performance, but when it came to standouts, Casey Adamson was awesome around the mid-court,” she said.
“Jess Lallo’s accuracy around the goal was impeccable and vital to us getting the win, and Sarah Szczykulski was amazing with her pressure and ability to get her hand on so many balls.”
The A-grade win capped off an excellent day on the netball court for Seymour, with three of its five teams coming away with victories over Mooroopna.
In B-grade, the Lions were far too strong, registering a 53-44 win over the traditionally strong Cats.
Seymour put on a clinic around the goal on the way to recording 53 goals, with Andrea McKenzie, Georgia Engel and Olivia Berry the standout players.
The B-reserve game was a similar story, as the Lions came away 60-30 victors.
In a dominant day on court for the home side, Chloe Yocke, Sophie Rutherford and Casey Drummond were recognised as the best players.
The juniors didn’t experience the same success as their senior counterparts, with the under-17s falling 38-46 and under-15s losing 25-30 in hard fought encounters.
