It was the Lions’ fourth consecutive victory — Ellie O’Sullivan’s squad dominant from start-to-finish in another statement win from the 2019 premier.
It was a game Seymour had circled on the calendar when the draw came out late last year, and O’Sullivan said she was incredibly proud of how the girls went about it.
“We were able to put a full 60-minute performance in, which was really pleasing, and shows we are really starting to find that consistency on court,” O’Sullivan said.
“Shepparton United are obviously really good competition, so to play like we did against that calibre of opposition, it gives us a lot of confidence and belief that we are a top contender.”
Leading into the game, O’Sullivan said the focus was around increasing their defensive pressure and forcing United into mistakes.
“We just wanted to do the ‘one percenters’, be really hungry for the ball and not let them get any flow in their game,” she said.
“I thought the girls really brought that intensity for the entire four quarters, and it was great to see that come off.”
The versatility of the Lions was another feature to their game at the weekend, with young Rosie O’Sullivan standing up in attack in the absence of star shooter Jessica Lallo.
“Missing Jess (Lallo), it forced us to play Rosie O’Sullivan in goals, which was actually a really good combination for us and I thought she played an excellent game,” O’Sullivan said.
“Along with Rosie, I thought our defensive unit was really strong; Sophie Rutherford stepped up and played A-grade again in wing defence and really impressed with her pressure.”
O’Sullivan said her squad was brimming with confidence.
“We are all really happy and all very excited,” she said.
“There is still a lot of work to do, and we’ve had some strong performances and others where we haven’t really fired, so we are using this time off to have a bit of a reset before we come back and try to improve our consistency.”
