What began as a unique attempt to overcome his personal battle with depression has impacted thousands of people, with his journey gaining the support of over 19,000 followers on his Facebook page.
Since departing on August 24, Marc paddled more than 2.5 million paddle strokes through three states and across 37 towns, meeting hundreds of people along the way both on the water and on social media.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your great endeavour, which is so badly needed to create meaningful conversations about depression,” said one Facebook follower from Amsterdam who spoke about the recent loss of her brother to depression.
Over the last three months, Marc has built the courage to talk openly and honestly about his battle with depression.
“Opening up to people about my depression has allowed me to take control of it and has inspired others to do the same.” Mr Nieuwenhuys said.
While this expedition is coming to an end, his journey to encourage people to start talking about their mental health has only just begun.
Marc has registered ‘Talking About A Lonely Journey’ as a charity and is also writing a book about his experience with depression and his journey along the river.
