The businesses have sponsored 10 pig races to be run over today and tomorrow at the Muster site.
Deniliquin CanAssist president Kellie Crossley said it is the second time the organisation has been chosen as the Muster’s charity partner, with thoroughbred pig races two years ago raising about $12,000 for locals battling cancer.
Mrs Crossley hopes more can be collected this year.
‘‘We are very grateful to be the Muster’s charity partner again, and hopefully we can raise even more awareness of the need to support rural people with cancer.
‘‘The muster has paid for the pig racing, so all proceeds from sponsorship and tickets go to helping people in our community.
‘‘Quite a few of our members will be on site helping out, and having a bit of fun at the same time.’’
A set number of pigs will compete in each of the weekend’s 10 races, with the winner getting the bowl of milk at the end of the chase.
Muster goers can purchase tickets for $2. For each race a corresponding number of tickets will be drawn, and assigned a pig in the race.
The ticket holder assigned the winning pig will get a cash prize.
‘‘We will also have one race each day as a calcutta, where we will auction the pigs.
‘‘This was a great fundraiser for us two years ago, and we’re hoping it will be even better this year based on the predicted size of the crowd.’’
