Meghraj Dahiya, who owns Seymour Kebab House, has recently opened a mortgage brokers called Express Lending and is currently on the lookout for clients.
“At the moment we are trying to help people who already have a mortgage because everybody is living in a tough time,” he said.
“We try and educate people by helping them save money on their mortgage.
“A majority of people, they don't want to change their lender – once they have the loan they just want to stay with them.
“But if you do change it or if you have a search (around), you could save a few thousand dollars a year on your mortgage and that can be used to pay rates or bills or be extra money in the pocket for a holiday.
“We (also) try and educate people to get their financial goals a bit easier and a bit quicker.”
Mr Dahiya has a masters of business administration and a Certificate IV in mortgage brokering to his name. He is also a member of the Australian Financial Complaints Authority and the Finance Brokers Association of Australia.
While he is currently focusing on clients with existing mortgages, Mr Dahiya said he offered mortgages of all kinds to those who needed them.
“We offer all kind of mortgages – they could be house loans, re-financing home loans to get better rates, we can do personal loans, car loans or asset financing if you run a business,” he said.
“We're an extra competitor and we have about 40 different lenders that we can approach and find the better deals for the customers.
“If you go to the bank you get only one product, but when you come to us we have 40 different lenders so we can find the best product that suits the customer's needs and expectations.”
As a local competitor to the big banks, Mr Dahiya is offering a gift voucher to new clients to spend at nearby businesses.
“When you come to me and get a refinancing loan or a new loan, then I want to give the customer a $300 gift voucher to spend on local businesses to help local shops and put money back into the local businesses,” he said.
Mr Dahiya said he could use some of the skills in his kebab business when talking with locals about their financial goals.
“(Seymour) Kebab House is going to help me establish this business because I know what they (community) are expecting from me and how I can make them happy,” he said.
“It's the same thing when they come to me as a mortgage broker, then I can see what they are expecting and why they have chosen me.”
