Every good gift comes from God

By Deniliquin Pastoral Times

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows,” 1 Chronicles 16:11-12.

Last Christmas, some of my friends told me, “time is quick, we’re almost at the end of the year now”. Some days more, “it’s the beginning of another year’’.

Yes! It’s new year today — the old days are gone and the new day begins.

I remember the words of the famous writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, once he wrote, “Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind’’.

No-one can stop the wings of time, but lessons, memories and gifts left behind.

As we begin this year, let’s start counting the blessings and gifts we received from the Lord.

Let us pause for a while and reflect on this beautiful passage of the book of Chronicles, “Every good gift is from above, coming down from the Father ... ”.

Yes, it all comes from God; even the life we enjoy now. Every breath we take is a precious gift to treasure and nurture every day.

Blessings are always more precious than the pains of the past. Pains are stories of the past and we cannot re-write them any more, it’s all lessons to be learned and we can turn them into a blessing.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Guard your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds. Discard them and their value will never be known. Improve them and they will become the brightest gems in a useful life’’.

Life is a perfect gift from God, to be treasured and nurtured every day.

Each moment is precious, don’t waste it. Use it for a purpose — God’s purpose.

As we begin this year, let us find time for silence and ask ourselves, ‘‘What was the biggest waster in your life last year?’’.
