Everton managed to scrape across the line against a determined Boorhaman, who were always within striking distance of a huge upset win.
Everton set up their victory early winning 2 of the first 3 sets, but Boorhaman hit back with 2 of the next 3 sets to set up an enthralling finish to the match.
With 3 sets to play Everton held a 7 game advantage which in the end proved too many for Boorhaman to haul back. Everton won 2 more sets which put the result beyond the reach of Boorhaman who were gallant in defeat.
Everton’s best were Ruth Kneebone(3), Noel Kneebone & Bec Sacco. Jack Paul (3) was outstanding for Boorhaman and was well support by Shirley Fuller & Kirsty Tyers.
Wang Hardcourt cruised to victory over Corowa on Saturday, after the first round of matches Hardcourt held 7 game lead and when they won the next 5 sets Hardcourt had established an unassailable lead.
Corowa were difficult opponents to shake with most games going to multiple deuces, but they weren’t able to win the important points when required, and it was Hardcourt’s steadiness in these moments which gave them the points and ultimately the match. Hardcourts were Denise Goodwin, Kylie Doig & Mario Pane (3 sets each), Corow’a best were Peter Filliponi, Jamie Almond & Jo Brooks.
Wahgunyah snuck home in another close match of the round 5-4 and 11 games, Wahgunyah were behind after the first 3 sets but as good teams do, they found their rhythm and consistency and won 2 of the turnaround sets to level the set ledger and hold a 3 game advantage. Jesse Johnstone & Ethan Palmer put the match beyond doubt for Wahgunyah with their 8-1 victory as the other 2 sets were going to the wire. Wahgunyahs’ best - Ethan Palmer (3), Travis McDonald & Jesse Johnstone. Rutherglen’s best - Helen Fuge, Nicole Balfour & Freya Somerville.
Section 3
Wooragee (Dean Bensted, Ian McVea, Mark Knoth, Eiylish McRostie) caused the boilover of the round when they cruised past Wahgunyah United (Brian Jones, Brad Schmidt, Erinne Lutz, Dorreyelle Carmody) who are entrenched in the top 2 on the ladder.
Wooragee were impressive with a consistency that had been missing before Saturday’s performance and if they can continue to repeat that performance on a regular basis, they will cause a few headaches for the top teams.
The Wahgunyah Wranglers (Scott Parker, Nathan Sandral, Josh Parker, Mitch Parker) juggernaut continues to brush opposition teams aside at will and last Saturday it was Wahgunyah Deep Heat (Josh Reid, Jacob Palmer, Kendall Reid, Kath Blake) that felt the wrath of the Wranglers machine.
