Mr Whitehead is the head of food, beverage and agribusiness insights for ANZ and was accompanied by Viveka Manikonda who is normally based in Bangalore India, but was in Deniliquin to learn more about the opportunities and challenges for Australian farmers.
Mr Whitehead spoke about the factors impacting the Australian agricultural sector, particularly the sheep and wool industries, as well as wheat and beef.
‘‘We covered a wide range of topics including global issues which will ultimately impact Australian farmers, discussing everything from growing wheat production in the Black Sea Region, to growing American consumption of Australian sheepmeat, to the rise in demand for non-animal proteins.
‘‘Importantly, we highlighted that while Australian agriculture will continue to face strong global competition, it is very well positioned to take advantage of the unceasing global demand.’’
State agribusiness manager James McKeefry, who also attended, said he believes the opportunity to have local events confirms to regional communities that the bank is committed to supporting its customers.
He said there had been challenging times in agriculture across New South Wales over the past year including this region and the local events ‘‘show our commitment to our customers and their industries in both good times and tough times’’.
He recognised local staff for organising the night, saying ‘‘the turnout of almost 100 people was testament to their efforts’’.
‘‘It was a privilege to be a part of the evening and I look forward to being back again soon. I enjoyed catching up with many of our clients and it was a great way to give something back, while also thanking them for their support.’’
