An arcing powerline started a grass fire about 400m from the shed on the Lindifferon Rd property early yesterday morning.
Fire authorities were called about 1am, and by the time they arrived the shed of hay was engulfed.
Mid Murray Rural Fire Service operational officer Col Munro said about 15 firefighters from multiple brigades fought the blaze throughout the night.
They were still on scene at 10am yesterday, and Mr Munro said the hay would continue to burn and smoulder for at least a few more days.
“The whole shed was fully involved, and it burned hot and quick,” Mr Munro said.
“With the wind and heat overnight it had some activities, and it will continue to burn for a few days at least.
“In sheds like that the heat just can’t escape.
“The firefighters have to let it burn down a bit more before it can be broken up,” he said yesterday.
Firefighters from the Wandook, Mayrung, Birganbigil and Myrtle Park RFS brigades all responded to the blaze.
Waste depot fire
Materials collected on a local garbage run are believed to have started a blaze at the Deniliquin Waste Depot on Friday.
Firefighters were called to the Conargo Rd site about 10.45am after a load dumped by one of the trucks started a blaze in the general waste section.
The fire was contained to the dumped pile of rubbish only.
Depot staff were breaking up the rubbish to aid in firefighting efforts, and firefighters from the Deniliquin RFS and Deniliquin NSW Fire + Rescue brigades spent about an hour extinguishing the blaze.
While the exact cause of the blaze is unknown, Edward River Council has suggested it might have been caused by a discarded battery or similar object.
“Quick thinking by the (Country Waste Systems garbage truck) driver and the tip operator ensured it was kept under control until the fire brigade and council’s water truck arrived on the scene,” council said.
“Thank you to everyone involved for working quickly, calmly and professionally to avert a bigger problem.”
