Keep your eyes and noses peeled for public toilets on your road trip this school holidays, because The Great Dunny Hunt is back, and you could go in the running to win a big prize.
Running from Friday, March 29, to Sunday, June 16, The Great Dunny Hunt is a nationwide pursuit to find and update listings for public toilets on the National Public Toilet Map.
By logging a new public restroom or updating the listing for an existing one, hunters can earn one entry and go in the running to win one of three $500 EFTPOS gift cards.
The annual event is held by non-for-profit organisation, the Continence Foundation of Australia, in order to find ways to improve the National Public Toilet Map and promote bladder, bowel, and pelvic floor health.
Acting chief executive Paula Hay said the Continence Foundation was “always finding new ways to improve the National Toilet Map’’.
“We are very excited to find out how we can continue to provide greater support for the one in four Australians impacted by incontinence,” Ms Hay said.
Dunny hunters can add information such as noting what amenities they have, or even just the hours they are open.
More than 23,000 public restrooms have been listed on the National Public Toilet Map all thanks to the avid participants of The Great Dunny Hunt in previous years.
Sean Buford won the Great Dunny Hunt of 2022 by entering more than 130 dunnies into the National Public Toilet Map, and said the experience was “rewarding”.
“The really rewarding aspect of the Great Dunny Hunt was discovering new locations in rural Australia,” Mr Buford said.
“Both toilet map and other sources have some misplaced or out of date dunnies, so once I had a location, I would research it to determine whether there was really a dunny there or not,” he said.
“This turned each lat and long coordinate into a story about each place, whether it was the most scenic toilet in Australia or perhaps a prime example of why one state’s toilets were better than those just across the border on the same highway.
“It sounds like a fair bit of work, but once I was familiar with the various websites it would take about five minutes to get a good feel for each spot.”
If you are on a road trip this school holidays, make the most out of those toilet breaks, win prizes and help a good cause.
