The big fish still continue to show up with Glenn Higgins getting in on the action and not to be out done by Michael Buchanan’s 115cm behemoth cod, caught an absolute beast of a cod measuring in at 123cm casting a Jackall Pompadour Surface Lure.
This would have to be one of the biggest cod caught in this area for quite some time. Congrats Glenn, fantastic effort.
It’s fish like this that really test your equipment and your fishing ability, hoping your knots will hold, your line won’t break, your drag is set correctly and just keeping your cool until the fish is safely landed for a quick pic and safely released.
Glenn has also picked up a few other fish up to 66cm casting spinnerbaits and hard-body lures up.
He spends a lot of time on the water every weekend, trolling the deep sections of the river going back and forth for some great fish. Glenn also spends early mornings casting from sun-up to mid-morning.
Tim Rose is also having a great season catching some great cod, the biggest so far being a cracking 93cm cod caught casting a small hard-body lure. It just goes to show you don’t need big lures to catch big fish.
Tim also managed a nice 56cm cod off the surface.
Lee Mann had a good day out recently catching a solid 70cm cod, well done Lee.
Pat Westcott is still finding a few smaller fish casting Oargee lures around the timber, and luck has not really been on his side with a couple of fish busting him off.
On one occasion Pat was trolling with a hot pink Oargee Plow in only a couple of metres of water when his lure was hit with such force it broke his line and he lost his lure.
Retuning to the same spot a couple of weeks later Pat found his lure resting in the roots of a tree and, with some new treble hooks put on, his lure it was ready for action again.
It only took a few casts and he momentarily hooked a solid fish only to have the lure pull free. The very next cast Pat hooked the fish again this time pulling the boat around with its power, only to shake the lure free from its mouth and leaving Pat devastated knowing he’d lost another huge fish. Unlucky, Pat.
I have also had some luck casting lures around with a couple of nice cod caught up stream from the Lawson Syphon area, the biggest being 74cm and 65cm.
Paul Telford was getting amongst the fish trolling up with a few nice cod, the biggest being 55cm, and also dropping a solid yellowbelly around the 50cm mark just beside the boat.
Peter, Cam and Abbey Wills have been catching some quality fish in the Billabong using bait, with Abbey doing it in style catching a solid 62cm cod on a grub, all while using her phone and listening to music. Cam also caught three yellowbelly using a shrimp and worm cocktail, the biggest being 39cm. Well done team Wills.
Over the next few weeks we should see the river starting to drop, this hopefully should see the fish go in search of food before the colder months arrive. If the water stays clear we should hopefully see more trophy sized fish being caught.
