While patrolling the streets of Deniliquin in the past week, Sergeant Cindy Hand came across a baby possum who had lost its mum.
It is possible he fell from his mother as she travelled from one tree to another and once on the ground would have been rather helpless.
The Murrray River Police District reported on their Facebook page ‘‘he was carefully collected and after a little cuddle, Sergeant Hand delivered to the cute little fella to the local vet’’.
‘‘Following a quick check over he was handed onto a local WIRES carer.
‘‘He will be cared for over the coming months till he grows and gains some strength. After that he will enjoy a life by the river.’’
Don’t drink and boat
Deniliquin Police patrolled the Murray River over the weekend, ensuring 2020 Mathoura Fishing Classic participants were safe and abiding by the law.
This led to the arrest of a 67 year-old Craigieburn man who had been drinking too much.
Police stopped him on the water about 3pm on Friday near Picnic Point and conducted a preliminary breath test which indicated he was above the limit.
He was arrested and taken back to the station where he blew 0.090.
Police confirmed he will attend court for operating a vessel with a mid-range prescribed concentration of alcohol.
Malicious damage
A 35 year-old Deniliquin man was arrested and charged with malicious damage after spending time at his mother’s home in west Deniliquin.
The man allegedly arrived at his mother’s house at 10.45pm on Friday and became abusive.
He was told to leave but instead smashed the rear window of a vehicle in the carport.
Police were called and gathered information on the incident, however the man had already left.
At 8.26am on Saturday, police went to a Davidson St home where they believed the man was located, and they were able to arrest and charge him.
Drug charges
At 3.50pm on Thursday, police spotted a 42 year-old Deniliquin man in Cressy St who had a warrant and stopped to arrest him in relation to it.
When searching the man, police discovered an ICE pipe and a small amount of Methamphetamines (ICE) and cannabis leaves.
He was charged with possession of a utensil, two counts of possessing a prohibited drug and one count of hindering police when he became non compliant as police searched him.
He was released on conditional bail.
Yelling at the park
Police were flagged down by a member of the public when a 28 year-old Deniliquin man started yelling at people in a park in west Deniliquin on Thursday at 11.50pm.
Police observed the man going off at multiple people and ‘‘became louder’’ when he spotted them.
Police said the man was intoxicated and holding a beer when he was ordered to move on.
When he failed to do so twice, police arrested him and gave him a fine for failing to comply with a direction given by a police officer.
Backyard jumper
Police are investigating possible trespassing and break and entering charges against a 38 year-old Deniliquin man who was seen entering several backyards.
He was first seen in a Cressy St backyard at 7.30pm on Sunday by the occupants who called police.
At 8pm police had another call from a Maher St residence who saw a similarly described man in their backyard.
He was found and spoken to by police who say he alleged he was searching for his bicycle which he had left at a friends house.
He was given a direction to leave the area and police are continuing their investigations.
