Acting on information received through the Fishers Watch tip line, NSW Fisheries officers conducted the big bust.
As a result, fines totalling more than $5000 have been issued.
NSW Fisheries officers investigating the tip-off said the fines related to the following alleged offences:
• Possessing more than the legal possession limit for Murray Cod;
• Exceeding the daily bag limit for Murray Cod;
• Possessing prohibited size Murray Cod;
• Taking Silver Perch from declared waters; and,
• Using unlawful traps
“Officers seized 11 Murray cod, ranging from 37cm to 52cm and all below the legal size, along with four silver perch and 10 unregistered traps,” NSW Fisheries reported.
“Unfortunately, the fish could not be returned to the water alive.”
Coming just ahead of this weekend’s Edward Kolety Fishing Challenge in Deniliquin, which has a primary aim to support the health of the river through restocking programs, all anglers are reminded to familiarise themself with fishing rules and regulations before taking to the water.
The slot limit for Murray Cod is 55cm to 75cm, and the daily bag limit is two per person.
One person cannot have more than four legal size cod in their possession at any one time. The possession limit applies when fishing for more than one day.
NSW Fisheries says as a threatened species in NSW, if silver perch is caught outside listed stocked impoundments they must be released immediately with minimal injury.“
