Bilkey, Cohen still at helm

Murray River Council returned Deputy Mayor Nikki Cohen and returned Mayor Chris Bilkey.

Murray River Council will continue under the leadership of Mayor Chris Bilkey and Deputy Mayor Nikki Cohen following Tues-day’s mayoral election.

This is the first mayoral election for the new council term, which started after the Local Government Elections on December 4.

There was no election in Murray River however, with only seven candidates standing to fill nine seats on the council.

A by-election will be held early next year to fill the vacant seats in Greater Murray and Greater Wakool wards.

Cr Bilkey said he was honoured to once again be elected as mayor.

‘‘To represent the residents of Murray River Council is a privilege, but representing our council as mayor is truly an honour,’’ he said.

‘‘I’m looking forward to working with my fellow councillors and the community to deliver our new Community Strategic Plan, new initiatives and to continue to provide the services and infrastructure our community needs and deserves.

‘‘Murray River Council is really progressing with positive momentum in many areas, so it’s a great time to be part of the council team.’’

The newly elected Murray River councillor group is made up of:

  • Greater Wakool Ward – Ann Crowe and Neil Gorey.
  • Moama Ward – Frank Crawley, Nikki Cohen and Cr Bilkey.
  • Great Murray Ward – Thomas Weyrich and Kron Nicholas.
