The intersection of the Murray Valley Highway and Silverwoods Boulevard is a renowned danger spot for traffic turning right out of Silverwoods onto the highway, and the site of a double fatality in 2023.
Oven’s Valley MP, Tim McCurdy has advocated to the Victorian Government for an urgent upgrade to the intersection since 2023, but not a single dollar has been forthcoming.
Mr McCurdy brought Shadow Transport Infrastructure Minister, Evan Mulholland to the intersection last week and said locals had been warning for years that the intersection was a disaster waiting to happen.
“After a tragic double fatality, the fact nothing has changed is unacceptable,” Mr McCurdy said.
“Silverwoods families are navigating an 80km/h zone that simply doesn’t reflect a rapidly growing residential area.
“With hundreds of new homes, a retirement village and surging daily commuter and construction traffic, the risk is escalating by the month.”
The call coincides with Moira Shire Council’s adoption of its Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2025–2030, as a commitment to reducing road trauma across the shire.
The strategy sets out a clear goal to halve road deaths and reduce serious injuries by 2030, with a long-term vision of zero harm by 2050.
Chair administrator Dr Graeme Emonson said road safety was a growing concern, especially given the region’s role as a key transport corridor for agriculture and freight.
“Our roads are used by a wide mix of vehicles from family cars to heavy farm machinery and we need to make sure they’re safe,” Dr Emonson said.
“This strategy outlines practical actions to improve road design, support safer speeds, promote safer vehicles, and encourage safer behaviour.
“It’s not just about infrastructure, it’s about education, enforcement, and working together.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility … one life lost is one too many.”
