Two teenage girls are alleged to have used fake $50 notes to purchase items at a Deniliquin service station.
Police said the girls went to the service station together and made separate purchases.
Both were given change for their $50.
Staff became aware something was wrong when one of the girls came back to the counter to purchase more items, this time producing a $100 note.
On investigation, police said it appears the girls tried to use the fake notes at another service station, but the notes were refused.
One of the girls will be dealt with via the youth caution process.
Investigations are continuing in relation to the other girl.
