The indie rock garage band from Perth formed in 2016, and it’s fair to say their recent rise has been of the meteoric variety.
The band consists of lead vocalist Caleb Harper, drummer and co-manager Kieran Lama, guitarist Ashton Le Cornu and bass guitarist Peppa Lane, who replaced Amelia Murray following her departure from the band in July 2019.
And they are all excited to see the region during March.
‘‘I have never been through regional New South Wales, so I’m really excited to see like what it’s like and to experience the landscape, be out there and talk to people about their experiences,’’ Mr Harper told the Pastoral Times.
‘‘It’s going to be a fun show, and we also love being able to see WAAX and San Cisco too, so it will be nice to hang out again.
‘‘But we are just super excited and so grateful for the opportunity to play shows again — and in Deniliquin of all places; that should be a good time.’’
Mr Harper said the band’s latest album ‘Sunlight’ will be the focus of their set, with ‘‘a few of our classics’’ and perhaps even some brand new music.
‘‘We are actually toying with a few new songs right now, so there is every chance they could be played in Deniliquin — no promises though,’’ Mr Harper teased.
‘‘Our set will mostly be a lot of ‘Sunlight’, which we put out in June last year, and then a couple of our classics.
‘‘There should be a lot of energy and we’ll be jumping around.’’
For relatively new kids on the block, the four piece band has had a very impactful start.
Spacey Jane has clocked up over 40 million streams and garnered huge support from industry and fans alike.
Festivals have been chasing the band for at least 18 months, leading to performances at Falls Festival, Splendour in the Grass, Yours and Owls, BIGSOUND, Wave Rock Weekender and, now, the Play on the Plains Festival.
But it all started as a group of friends who just love music.
‘‘We are firstly just really good friends, and we started playing together in our first and second year of uni just because we love music,’’ Mr Harper said.
‘‘Over time it’s sort of become our biggest passion.
‘‘For me, as a songwriter, it’s become a vehicle to process things in life, process feelings and reflect on childhood and all those sorts of things.’’
And to those wanting to get into the music industry, Mr Harper said it is all about practising what you love.
‘‘You can get good at the craft no matter where you are, so just practice writing as many songs as you can, and rehearse, and take every opportunity to perform, even if they’re few and far between,’’ he said.
‘‘That’s the most important thing; it is about the time, the love and the energy that you put into something.’’
Other artists set to play at the festival include Deniliquin’s Taylah King and Echuca’s Benny Walker as well as San Cisco, WAAX and Ruby Fields.
Play on the Plains will be held at the Deni Ute Muster site from 1pm to 9.30pm.
Earlier that day, the Ute Muster team will officially open its new HQ and museum at the site.
