After signing-up to complete the Walking 4 Warriors 2025 Endurance Challenge Fundraiser earlier this year, Deniliquin’s Hamish Baker completed the 24-hour challenge in Queensland on Good Friday last month.
Participants of the endurance challenge have to keep moving throughout either a three, six, 12 and 24-hour challenge period.
Hamish opted for the 24-hour challenge, running, walking or even crawling continuously each hour.
Before taking part, he had trained and fundraised for several months to support the Walking 4 Warriors organisation that promotes physical and mental health to help push people beyond what they perceive as normal limitations.
It aims to foster physical, mental, emotional growth and development, as well as supporting ex-military veterans and first responder groups.
The challenge starts each year at 6pm on the Friday before Anzac Day.
This saw Hamish walk through the evening and continue into the day on Saturday.
During the 24-hour challenge walking around the Dennis Park course at Boyne Island, Queensland, Hamish completed over 77kms which is over 3kms an hour for 24 hours.
For completing the 24-hour challenge, Hamish received a commemorative medal.
Following the event, Hamish said the challenge across 24 hours did test his physical limits.
“It was tougher physically than I thought, I had to get physio on my back and my Achilles during the event.”
Despite this, Hamish said he found himself capable to keep pushing on.
“I took minimal breaks during the event because I didn’t want my body cooling down, and I didn’t find it too mentally challenging to continue on walking.”
Hamish received good community support, raising $502 through a GoFundMe page across the last few months, smashing his goal of $250 with the link for donations due to be closed soon.
All funds raised by Hamish will go straight to Walking 4 Warriors to assist them in directly providing programs and opportunities for the community to support each other.
