The development comprises three homes in Deniliquin and two in Finley, falling under a $200.1 million initiative that will deliver more than 20 Key Health Worker Accommodation projects throughout rural, regional and remote NSW.
The Murrumbidgee region is one of nine local health districts to have received accommodation funding.
NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said the program encompasses new builds, renovations of existing properties, and acquisitions.
“We're committed to strengthening our regional, rural and remote workforce and this project is vital because we know that affordable, accessible accommodation is critical to attracting staff in regional and rural areas,” he said.
“The New South Wales Government recognises our healthcare workers are the backbone of our regional and rural communities, which is why we're heavily investing in dedicated accommodation to support them in these areas.”
NSW Member for Murray Helen Dalton stressed the project's local impact.
“It is critical we attract and keep health workers in western New South Wales - in this case Deniliquin and Finley,” she said.
“A boost to accommodation facilities will hopefully encourage more key health workers to relocate to remote and rural locations, and those already here to stay.
“These new accommodation units will provide an opportunity to fill vacant health care positions and support communities that are currently in desperate need of quality care.”
Funding for housing nearing completion was announced in February this year.
In a separate funding announcement in April, Deniliquin was promised a share of $10 million for housing specifically for paramedics. Fifteen new paramedics were assigned to Deniliquin at about the same time.
