While jointly named Murray River Council’s Citizens of the Year last week, Irene and John’s volunteer work has been done separately.
But they have both been there to support each other through their various roles and tasks.
“Both Irene and John have been recognised with this award for over 50 years of volunteer work, and for their willingness to dedicate time, effort and passion for the benefit of the Wakool community,” their joint nomination read.
In her nomination, Irene was described as “a quiet achiever, always in the background, giving her time selflessly, never making a fuss but ever-reliable”.
“She assisted religious instruction at the Wakool Public School from 1978 until 2012, an incredible 34 years.
“She became treasurer of St Luke’s Church in 1995 and remained treasurer until the fire destroyed the church in 2017. During her time as treasurer, Irene was also on the Parish Council.
“Irene has been an active committee member of the Wakool Welcome Centre since the early 90s and has been treasurer for that organisation for 30 years.
“She has been on the Home and Community Care committee, the Wakool P&C, netball committee, tennis committee and is currently the treasurer of the Wakool Hall Committee.”
John’s community involvement started within the local sporting clubs, but expanded to include other important groups.
“On arriving in the Wakool area, John became actively involved in the Wakool Football Club, coaching and playing for many years,” his nomination read.
“He had a keen focus on developing young players and developing strong club spirit and a strong sense of community identity.
“After retiring from the playing, John became an active committee member in the roles of committee person, secretary or president.
“He was instrumental in the building of the then-new football complex back in the day, and continued to work tirelessly for the football club.
“He is a life member of the Wakool Football Netball Club and the Wakool Cricket Club.”
In his other roles, John has been a member of the Wakool RSL Board for many years and was on the Recreation Reserve Committee.
He was also a founding member of the Golden Hawks Club - a volunteer community group focused on supporting community organisations and events.
“Although stepping down from committee roles in recent times, John continues to volunteer his time to support the community,” his nomination read.
