Discussion about the safety of the intersection between Cobb Hwy and Nicholas Dve in Moama intensified following a recent two-car collision.
A spokesperson for Murray River Council said the intersection had been highlighted to council in a recent traffic study as a priority to be upgraded to a roundabout.
“The installation of a roundabout would be the initial suggestion that council will be taking to the next local traffic committee meeting to raise with New South Wales Police and Transport for NSW,” the spokesperson said.
“Over the five-year period between 2016 to 2020, there were two crashes at this intersection, which resulted in zero injuries.
“2021 crash statistics have yet to be finalised by Transport for NSW and haven’t been released to councils yet.”
Inspector Paul Huggett of the Murray River Police District said police had not received an overwhelming number of reports for it to be deemed a high risk intersection.
He explained that for an intersection to be classified as dangerous, there has to be the statistics to support that notion.
“There’s nothing on my system and from my local knowledge that indicates that it is a high risk intersection,” Insp Huggett said.
“There could be minor crashes or near misses that are occurring that we are not aware of as we are usually only called out if a collision is significant or serious. “I believe there were some potholes down there but they’ve now been patched.”
