The Deniliquin Truck Show committee this week presented a $4000 donation to Deniliquin High School’s week-long driver education program.
It will be used to support the 2024 program, which will be run in term four.
Deni High teacher Anthony Michael, who is the program’s co-ordinator, said the donation would help subsidise the cost of training for the participating Year 10 students.
“The funding could potentially be used to secure guest speakers or contribute to the one free driving lessons all students receive by taking part in the program,” he said.
“Donations like this one are really important. Anything that can be done to minimise the cost to students to take part in this important program is welcomed.
“Our aim aligns with the Truck Show in that we always try and include something about sharing the roads with trucks in our program.
“In the past, we’ve had Paul Fellows bring one of his trucks along. The kids can sit in the driver’s seat, and we can’t point out how difficult it is for them to see what might be around them.
“That then hopefully sticks in their minds when they are passing trucks once they get their licence.
“We’ve also had TruckSafe involved in our program over the years.”
Truck Show committee president Leesa Muir said it is because of those common goals of road safety the committee was happy to support the education program.
“The driver education program was started more than 10 years ago, and is a real success story,” Ms Muir said.
“It’s not only helping our young people be safer and more confident drivers, but the model devised and implemented by Deniliquin’s volunteer committee is now also rolling out to other schools across the country.
“The program has won a number of awards already because of its success, and we’re proud to help it grow and reach even more young people into the future.”
The Rotary Club of Deniliquin 2024 Deniliquin Truck Show and Industry Expo, the Deniliquin & District Transport Wall of Fame dinner, and the transport industry memorial service will be held from October 25-27 this year.
