As well as filling a gap in your business, and offering an opportunity for someone to join your industry, employers can also take advantage of a new wage subsidy program.
And if you engage Murray Mallee Training Company to help you find the right employee, they also do all the government paperwork for you too.
MMTC employment/training consultant Susie Stafford said Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements is an initiative of the Australian Government, and offers a 50 per cent wage subsidy (up to $7000 per quarter) for all employers who engage a new Australian Apprentice.
It is only available for employers who take on an eligible Australian Apprentice between March 31 and June 30 this year.
Also available is the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System, which offers subsidies between 10 per cent and five per cent (depending on apprentice year) to employers and begins from July 1 this year.
Mrs Stafford said an important first step is for employers and job seekers to contact MMTC.
“We want employers to contact us, and we want potential trainees and apprentices to register with us, so we have a database we can call on,” she said.
“All you need to do is come in, speak to our business administration trainee Courtney Williams and fill out the form.
“You can stipulate on the form exactly what it is you’re looking for in your work or in an employee, and then when an opportunity comes up we can find the right person to put forward.”
Recently taking on a trainee herself, Mrs Stafford said it is rewarding to impart knowledge on someone who in turn can help the business.
“I was getting busier because I have a dual role, which includes covering both New South Wales and Victoria as a trainer in business and retail,” Mrs Stafford said.
“I am also a group training field officer, and provide pastoral care and support for apprentices and trainees employed through our Group Training Scheme.
“We thought it was worthwhile to have someone else who could help our clients while I am away for those part of the job.
“Courtney started a few months ago and is showing a lot of promise.”
