He was upstairs with his 1983-84 premiership teammates on Saturday as his son, Jordan, produced a one-on-one mark in the goal square reminiscent of Souter senior’s own brilliant body use during the 1970s and 1980s. Souter junior snapped the winning goal with only seconds left in the match against Numurkah to secure a four-point win.
Tongala went into the game as a significant underdog, sitting 11th on the ladder and shocked the second-ranked Numurkah with the result, inspired by the presence of Tongala premiership players from 1961, 1983 and 1984. Only a week before the celebration, the last surviving member of the club’s only other GV premiership, in 1949, Bob Dawson died at 102 years of age.
