Luca competed at the NSW Country Championships in Sydney over the weekend.
Competing in five events, he won gold in both the 50m and 100m breaststroke.
The 13 year-old managed to swim national qualification times in both of these events, but you have to be 14 or older to compete at nationals.
Breaststroke is Luca’s best event, and he was two seconds off another national qualifying time in the 200m breaststroke.
He also performed well in the 50m freestyle and butterfly.
Luca’s father, Rohan Caniglia, said the trip to Sydney went well.
“Luca is performing better each time. It’s a testament to all the hard work he has put in.
“It’s exciting to see what he’s achieved with only two years of solid training.
“There is so much to improve on still. We can see the improvement to be made in his start as compared to his competitors, who have been training for years.
“However, he has good strength, and once he’s in the water, he has real power, which shows.”
Luca is off to Sydney again next weekend for the Speedo sprint championships, representing the Southern Inland Swimming Association in two freestyle relays and 100m breaststroke.
He will also compete locally in the Deniliquin PSSA Swimming Carnival in Hay on Monday.
