Mathoura and district has been saddened by the recent death of popular local man, John ‘Herbie’ Hickey, at just 54 years of age.
Their grief has been heightened by the Coronavirus regulations which prevented them from giving him the traditional ‘send-off’.
A private cremation has been held for Herbie, but his many friends will have the opportunity to say goodbye at a public memorial service at a date to be determined.
Herbie is survived by his partner, Eileen, and children John and James.

It has been disappointing to learn the Mathoura Bendigo Bank Agency has been forced to close its door in a flow-on from Coronavirus.
The move will no doubt impact on the local elderly who are not computer savvy or have bank cards.
However, help is at hand for many, thanks to Noel and Lili at the Mathoura Post Office. They are offering a great range of banking services for people with bank cards.
You can make deposits and withdrawals, check your account balances and pay credit card bills.
If anyone has any ideas of how we can help those who still use bank books, please let me know by phoning 0427 843 526.

Safety has been increased in the grounds of the Mathoura Public School, thanks to the school’s Parent and Citizens Association.
The group has purchased post protectors for the sandpit, basketball court and playground.
The protectors have been installed recently and look great.

How are you handling the current restrictions?
In my case I was confined to home isolation by my daughter some time before the government authorities got the idea.
Those who know her can attest, she didn’t just shove me in the door and leave me to battle it out as best I could, she loaded me up with groceries and other requirements to get me through. She also left money at the general store and butcher and made arrangements for home deliveries.
That has prompted a cooking surge, dusting off the cookbooks and giving my stove the shock of its life. No, the oven has not blown up but I am down to one and a half hot plates!
The garden has also been given a workout, something I enjoy much more than cooking, with things I’ve been wanting to get done for ages finally being achieved.
I just wish I was a twin so there would be another pair of hands to help out when needed.
And my hands! They’ve been washed so many times I reckon they’ll be a couple of shades lighter than the rest of my body when this is all done.
Everyone stay safe and hang in there.

Mathoura joined the rest of the world paying tribute to those on the front line during the current pandemic this week.
While it was at short notice, several families stood at their front doors/gates and clapped and gave a shout out to those on the front line in this current pandemic.
And local shutterbug, Zowie Crump, was around town capturing the activities on film.
I know that the current pandemic is a serious issue for all of us worldwide but there are many people who can see a funny side to it all.
Those who are on Facebook are constantly amused by some of the many things people post; like a picture of several seagulls sitting on poles along a jetty with the caption ‘At least these have got the message about staying at home’.
