While all reports associated with the Deniliquin Ute Muster and the state-wide Operation Labour Day 2023 are still being collated, early data available suggests the messages about impaired driving are getting through.
Inspector Sarah Lugsdin reported on Wednesday that 1600 random breath and drug detection tests has been recorded in the region over the weekend.
As a result, only four people were charged with drink driving, and 12 with drug driving offences.
“It was a high visibility operation so we were expecting people to be careful, but we do want to thank road users for being safe,” Insp Lugsdin said.
“It was a 24/7 operation, and we consider it a success.”
Police were required to issue a number of other fines and charges through, with 100 exceed speed fines issued across the district, 11 mobile phone offences and seven seatbelt offences.
There were 15 other traffic infringements and 196 ‘other’ offences, and one criminal charge laid.
The statistics do not include the burn incident at the Deni Ute Muster site on Saturday evening (see page 5).
Insp Lugsdin said the long weekend operation was undertaken by Murray River Police District and the South West Traffic and Highway Patrol Command.
