More than $13,000 has been raised for Deniliquin Hospital thanks to a dedicated group of local cyclists and their support crew.
That is the amount raised by the Murray to Moyne cycle team before the weekend’s 537km relay from Echuca to Port Fairy.
Murray to Moyne cyclist Darcy Biggs said the Saturday and Sunday ride was a success, despite riding against the wind for most of the way.
“We had head winds most of the ride,” said Mr Biggs.
“This made it a little more challenging and we had less riders to rotate this year, but all in all we were pretty lucky with the weather.
“The numbers for the event were strong, there were about 500 other riders who went from Echuca, which was pleasing to see.”
This is the 32nd time a Deniliquin team has ridden in the annual event, missing only three races in its history.
Over this time the group has raised more than $300,000 for the hospital through various fundraising events, which has helped to purchase much needed equipment such as princess chairs, a portable oxygen generator and a defibrillator in recent years.
A significant contribution of funds raised for this year’s donation came from a night of music and a silent auction held at the Deniliquin Boat Club earlier this year.
Mr Biggs said while the legs are feeling a little sore this week, the money raised for Deni Hospital makes it all worth it.
“They (Deni hospital staff) are still working out what they will use the money for, but they were planning on using some of the money to purchase a transport capsule for premature babies,” he said.
“Previously they’ve had to borrow one from Victoria, so the money will hopefully go towards that and some other medical equipment.”
Mr Biggs thanked local businesses, the community and health service staff for their ongoing support for the team over the years.
