Student Nathanael Hancock said he gained experience in a multitude of different areas with the music organisation across the week.
Already connected to the organisation while learning piano and violin, Nathanael said he gained some insight on the teaching side of music lessons last week.
“I spent a lot of time in individual and group lessons helping pack up and set up lessons, as well as observing the lessons.
“I was also teaching ukulele. I taught a little class of ukelele to the staff at South West Music.
“I’ve done some marketing and given flyers out around town for the Penny Quartet who are coming to Deniliquin, and I’ve played the piano on the steps out the front of the South West Music building, just playing some improvised stuff.
“I’ve learned about marketing and business operations here as well as talked to Michael, the general manager, learned a bit about the construction and building project that is being done here as well as learning about finances.
“I’ve got to experience all the parts of South West Music.”
Nathanael had said he had thought about pursuing teaching music as a way to live out his passion before work experience, but following work experience, it was his first time considering it as a real option.
“Knowledge and teaching are two very different things. I see myself doing something in the music industry.
“I know how unstable and how much of a risk it can be in music, and know that it can be very risky and difficult. Perhaps teaching could provide a more stable and fulfilling career path.
“During the week, I got a great insight on how it works. I learned how to teach and what it’s like, and I also learned how to conduct and to control a class.
“I have briefly thought about teaching as a path in the past, but this is the first time I have very seriously considered teaching music and or musicology, for example in a primary school or high school.
“It’s been wonderful, everyone here has been so welcoming, and it has been very informative, fun and engaging.
South West Music General Manager Michael Bakrnčev said it was great to have Nathanael learning about the different avenues that are available.
He said Nathaneal is a talented musician, having recently performed to rave reviews at the Deniliquin U3A talent concert, and being selected to attend a state music camp.
