New teacher’s new experience

Molly McMullen.

Deniliquin and Deniliquin High School has welcomed a budding teacher and her partner to town, providing a smooth transition for a country girl.

Molly McMullen has joined the English and HSIE departments this term.

She made the move during the July school holiday period, but said she was already a little familiar with her new hometown before arriving.

“I visited a bit as a kid because my godparents live in Deni.

“I’ve definitely spent a few summer holidays here.

“I’m originally from Gundagai. Which is not too far away, just under four hours.”

Ms McMullen said she is pleased to continue building on her career in education at Deni High.

“I’m relatively new to teaching. 18 months ago, I started teaching at the start of 2023 at Gundagai High School.

“I sort of came into teaching a bit late, as I did a masters of teaching after finishing an undergraduate degree.”

Ms McMullen said the opportunity to come to Deniliquin came through a job offer for her fiancé.

“My fiancé got a job over here, and combined with having godparents and family friends in the area, I thought, ‘why not give it a go?’.

“It is a chance to get away while we’re still young, experience something new and explore while also leaning on somewhere we’re a bit familiar with.

It has been an adjustment starting halfway through the school year, but everyone at Deni High - teachers and students - has been really nice and made me feel welcome.

“I couldn’t have had a smoother transition to a new town.”
