After months of planning, Steve’s Courtsey Cars now has the right insurance to be able to transport chair-bound passengers.
Such a service has been missing from the community since Deniliquin Taxis closed in February this year.
Other wheelchair accessible services in the community are available to registered clients of those providers only.
Steve’s Courtsey Cars owners Steve and Lesley Baker said they wanted to fill the gap, which locals have expressed was sorely needed.
“A lot of people have approached us in the last few months to see if we would be providing wheelchair transport,” Mrs Baker said.
“With the 11-seat Hiace we can comfortably fit one wheelchair passenger and about eight others, and larger groups when a wheelchair is not required.
“We do ask that passengers with a wheelchair book with us at least 24 hours before their trip, or 48 if possible, just to make sure we have the van and a driver available.”
Mr Baker said they purchased the van - which previously belong to Kurrajong - several weeks ago, but there was a delay with getting hold of the right insurance.
He said with assistance from the staff at Member for Murray Helen Dalton’s office, they finally got the responses they needed.
Mr Baker said the wheelchair service would be available mainly for localised travel, but he said some trips to other regional towns for medical and other appointments could be available if arranged ahead of time.
He said it is preferred that wheelchair users be accompanied by a companion or carer where possible.
