The school community took part in Day for Daniel - a campaign about child safety and aimed at bringing awareness to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.
The foundation was founded by Daniel’s parents Bruce and Denise after the 13 year-old was abducted and murdered in December 2003. His body was eventually found in 2011.
“We wear red because that’s the colour Daniel was wearing when he went missing,” student Sophie Taylor said.
Fellow student Sydney Cairns said the day started out with a special red themed breakfast at the school, with red pancakes and red fruit.
More red treats were served at the school canteen throughout the day, and everyone wore a touch of red in honour of the day.
Student Grace Macdonald said students were taught throughout the day about how to remain safe, which included each class taking part in the Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson designed for their age groups.
Adding to the red and safety theme, the day coincided with a visit from NSW Rural Fire Service Mid Murray Zone district coordinator Gerard James, who spoke with the students and then let them get up close and personal with a fire truck.
“The firefighter taught us what to do if we’re in a house fire for if there is a grass fire, including getting out and staying low,” student Henry Campion said.
“We also learned about what to do in a bush fire,“ fellow student Harley Benger added.
The lesson also included information on the role of the RFS, and Jack Wharton said they were surprised at just how many RFS stations and sheds there were in our region and the state.
North School has participated in Day for Daniel every year since 2019.
