Amateur and top ranked golfers alike hit the greens for the Pro Golfers Association of Australia’s Deniliquin Pro-Am.
For some, it was the start of a big week of golf with the Stuart Appleby Cohuna Pro-Am hosted yesterday and the 66th Border Open Pro-Am in Barham this weekend.
Speaking to the Pastoral Times before teeing off on Wednesday, pro golfer Marcus Fraser said he was keen for the new experience.
Despite growing up not too far away in Corowa, and living in Melbourne, he said he’d never taken to the Deni greens before.
“Everyone has been raving about it, so I am looking forward to getting out there,” he said before taking his turn at the practice driving range.
“It’s actually a big week on the Pro-Am circuit, adding to Cohuna and Barham.
“It will be great.“
Fraser turned professional in late 2002, and has played about 450 tournaments around the world. This included 364 on the European Tour.
He has played 13 major championships including four US Opens, three US PGAs and six British Opens. His best result among these was a finish in a tie for 20th at the 2015 British Open at the home of golf, St Andrews.
Fraser also represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Olympics, finishing in a tie for 5th and setting a course record 63 in the first round.
Other top golfers in Deniliquin on Wednesday included two time PGA Tour of Australia winner Matthew Millar and Lachlan Barker who claimed the PNG (Papua New Guinea) Open and his first PGA Tour of Australia win this year.
Fifty golfers took to the course for the morning session, and 96 for the afternoon fours session.
