After updates from the Deniliquin Local Health Advisory over several months saying it was close, Murrumbidgee Local Health District has this week confirmed “an oncology outreach clinic is now available at Deniliquin Health Service”.
This brings care closer to home for some patients.
“As a part of an agreement between Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) and the Riverina Cancer Care Centre, the Deniliquin Oncology Unit will offer medical oncology services up to two days a week,” an MLHD spokesperson said.
“The Deniliquin medical oncologist will work collaboratively with the patient’s treating team to determine how the unit can support care.
“Oncology patients who require chemotherapy or immunotherapy as part of their treatment plan may be eligible for the service.
“Patients at the clinic will receive their treatment with no out-of-pocket costs.”
Patients also have access to a range of specialist cancer support services provided by MLHD including:
• Cancer care co-ordinator
• Aboriginal cancer care co-ordinator
• Oncology social worker
• McGrath cancer care nurses
• Prostate cancer specialist nurse
Assessment and referral pathways are also available for access to physiotherapy, dietetics, and other allied health services through the MLHD Community Care Intake Service.
“The three-chair unit at Deniliquin is staffed by a medical oncologist, clinical nurse consultant and registered nurses,” the MLHD spokesperson said.
“Local nurses have been supported to upskill by undertaking the relevant training to enable them to deliver chemotherapy services.”
Patients are encouraged to speak with their treating team to assess their eligibility for the Deniliquin oncology service.
