There will be a hive of activity in the Deniliquin CBD on Thursday in celebration of NAIDOC Week.

The Deniliquin Local Aboriginal Lands Council will host its popular NAIDOC Koori Market on the Cressy St side of the park, surrounding the Multi Arts Hall.

This is a great change to learn about and support local Aboriginal culture.

Market stalls will be a mix of local community members selling their products, and service providers who will share information on how they support the community.

There’s also activities for young and old alike, and a barbecue lunch will be provided.

The action kicks off on Thursday at 10.30am, and continues through until 2.30pm.

The Koori Market is not the only activity planned for NAIDOC Week - an annual week to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Murray River Police District will kick off the week with a flag raising ceremony and lunch at the Deniliquin Police Station on Monday.

Chief Inspector Michael Fuller said the public is welcome to attend the festivities, starting about 11.15am.

“The flag raising event has been a tradition that we continue at the Deniliquin Police Station, and will include local Aboriginal and Torres Strait community representatives for a Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony and celebration of NAIDOC.

“The event will be followed by a barbecue at the front of the Deniliquin Hospital thanks to the support of the Murrumbidgee Local Health District.”

Coordinating the event has been police Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer Tegan Hadjialexiou, who will also be in attendance at the Koori Market on Thursday.
