The new Benalla Family Research Group calendar has recently been released for sale.
Next year’s calendar features the ‘watering holes’ or pubs of Benalla and district, over time.
The history of the three currently still operating hotels in the city centre and the four country hotels in the local districts, and several of the better-known hotels of yesteryear that have since closed or disappeared from existence, have been documented and researched and presented along with available pictures in the new calendar.
At one stage in Benalla’s history there were 17 hotels, together with numerous wine shanties and stores selling liquor operating at the same time.
This caused a local act to be brought into being and gave the local public the opportunity to advise on which hotel was popular or not required, and the powers-that-be at the time the authority to close or amalgamate a number of the hotels and reduce the total number operating to nine.
The 2025 calendar can be purchased for the same $10 price as last year’s calendar from our grateful sponsors and supporters: the West End Store, TerryWhite Chemmart, the information centre, Millers, Stuck on Stationery, Benalla Vets, Mitre10 and the group rooms on Tuesday and Wednesdays from 10am to 4pm.
