Despite a concerted effort by potential users to retain the clay courts, Edward River Council resolved last month to remediate the site.
Fencing and lighting, as well as existing buildings, will be removed over coming weeks and the site levelled.
No decision has yet been made on what will replace the courts in that space, but council has said it is being cleared so it can be ‘‘utilised more fully in the future’’.
“This project will provide a clear, open space suitable for future works that will enhance the entrance into town,” Mayor Norm Brennan said.
“This project will lead to the employment of local contractors, as well as being a key step in the overall process to rehabilitate and develop this site under a future project.”
A separate project focused on community consultation and development of a concept plan that will outline how this site will be developed in the future has also started.
Previous suggestions have been to utilise the space as an off leash dog park.
A draft version of the plan will be considered at council’s November meeting, next Thursday.
The demolition works — contracted to Deniliquin company Murray Constructions — are expected to take about three weeks.
