Currently falling to below her waist, the selfless youngster is now willing to part with it all for a good cause.
The aptly named Ruby’s Big Chop 4 Kids with Cancer Event will be held Saturday, June 15 at the Blighty Recreation Reserve.
The event coincides with the Blighty Football Netball Club’s sponsors day.
Ruby is a member of the club’s fourths football side, and the Redeyes will be taking on Yarroweyah in that round.
Chosen to help Ruby with the chop is local hairdressing business SRM Northside Hair and Beauty.
Ruby’s mother, Casey Gordon, said her daughter came up with the idea to donate her hair to charity all by herself.
“She’s been growing it for two years, and it’s grown all the way down to her bum,” Casey said.
“Ruby decided she’d like to have it cut off and donated.
“We looked at the options and decided to go with Wigs 4 Kids.”
While the teen is slightly apprehensive, Casey said it would be a literal weight off Ruby’s shoulders.
“She is a bit nervous about the event, but loves the idea of doing it for others and is definitely looking forward to it.
“It’s also quite thick and heavy, so I think she’s looking forward to not having to carry it all around.
“Ruby plays footy for the fourths team, so it’ll be great to have it done on Blighty’s Sponsors Day.”
Casey said the plan is to have the shave as the half-time entertainment during the seniors match.
“Sharyn McKenzie from SRM Northside Hair will be in charge of the chop, and because it is so long it has to be plaited before it gets cut.
“We’ll also rattle some tins throughout the day to raise some money for the cause and support kids with cancer.
“We want to give thanks to and say we couldn’t do any of this without the support of Wigs 4 Kids, Sharyn and Blighty Football Netball Club, who have supported us right the way through this.”
